A plan to improve roadways and expand mass transit—easing congestion in the central Puget Sound region

About Roads & Transit

Roads & Transit is a proposal to improve roads and transit in Snohomish, King and Pierce counties. It is being developed jointly by Sound Transit and the Regional Transportation Investment District (RTID) Planning Committee.

The proposal will be on the November 2007 ballot for voters in the Sound Transit and RTID Planning Committee districts. These districts include portions of Snohomish, King and Pierce counties.

The 2006 Washington State Legislature required the RTID Planning Committee and Sound Transit to jointly submit a transportation financing plan to voters in the 2007 general election. RTID and Sound Transit began working together on the Roads & Transit plan in June 2006. Along with regional planning and transportation agencies, they conducted years of engineering and design work. They also informed the public and collected public comments through open houses, surveys, letters, meetings and hearings.

Sound Transit is currently completing Phase 1 of a regional mass transit system, including light rail, commuter rail and express bus service. Sound Transit’s Phase 2 plan calls for expanding the regional mass transit system and is the transit part of the Roads & Transit package.

The RTID Planning Committee has recommended a plan for road and bridge investments in key highway corridors in Snohomish, Pierce and King Counties. These investments would build on improvements that WSDOT has already made or are underway. The plan, called the Blueprint for Progress, is the roads part of the Roads & Transit package.

The Washington Legislature authorized the creation of both Sound Transit (in 1990) and the RTID Planning Committee (in 2002). The purpose of Sound Transit is to build a mass transit system that connects employment and population centers in King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties. The purpose of the RTID Planning Committee is to enable citizens of King, Pierce and Snohomish counties to choose transportation investments.
